Michelle Boulos has a new favorite color. Silver.
Most skaters will tell you that the opportunity to represent their country in a world class international event is a highlight of their life. Michelle Boulos boarded the plane for Bratislava, Slovakia with just this thought in mind. "My goal was to skate well," she said.
After her trip to the Andrej Nepela Memorial, the season's first international senior level event, Michelle returns to Boston as an international silver medalist. And her well-known smile is just a bit broader these days.
The 19-year old skater, who trains at SCOB with Suna Murray and Peter Johansson, was a standout in a field that also featured veteran and former European champion Julia Sebestyan. While Sebestyan led the short program, Boulos owned the second spot with both strong technical and component marks in her program to "The Hours," posting a score of 49.28-more than a five point cushion over third place Teodora Postic of Slovenia.
Boulos began her free skate to Swan Lake with a clean triple loop and triple toe. Her next jumps had some missteps, and she experienced a fall on her final triple Lutz. The judges placed her third in the free skate with 88.76 behind Sebestyan and Jenna McCorkell of Great Britain, yet Boulos' strong short program score kept her placed at second overall with a total score of 138.04. "I did little mistakes. I am happy with my overall performances," an exuberant Boulos declared.
