We're familiar with the accolades our skaters amass on the ice. Now, four SCOB skaters are recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom. At the recent US National Championships, held in St. Paul, Minnesota, SCOB members Kylie Gleason, Katrina Hacker, Curran Oi, and Chloe Wolf were among the ten competitive skaters named to the U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors Team.

The team was honored in an on-ice ceremony January 26th during the National Championships. "I didn't know anything about this until I got to St. Paul," said Mark Mitchell, who together with Peter Johansson coaches Gleason, Hacker, and Oi. "This is a tremendous achievement for these skaters who give so much to their training yet value the importance of being well-rounded."

Kylie Gleason, a senior at Noble & Greenough, competed in the 2007 Nationals as a senior lady, finishing 15th. A straight-A student, Gleason makes time to volunteer at Tufts-New England Medical Center and traveled to Romania to work in hospitals and orphanages.

Katrina Hacker will graduate this year from the Professional Children's School in New York where she maintains high honor roll recognition. The 6th place finisher at the 2008 US National Championships has also qualified for the National Merit Scholarship competition. As a producer of "Edges for Education," Hacker helped raise over $32,000 for the Literacy Center at Boys and Girls Harbor in Harlem.

Curran Oi is a junior at Wellesley High School where he excels at science and math. The two-time national medalist enjoys using his skating to help the community through fund-raising shows. He was the recipient of the 2007 Mary Louise Wright Memorial Award for his excellence in skating, academics, and leadership.

Chloe Wolf is a senior at Falmouth High School in Falmouth, Maine. Together with her partner, Rhys Ainsworth, they are the 2008 Novice Ice Dance champions. Wolf is a straight-A student and National Merit Scholar semi-finalist. She serves her community working in a soup kitchen, bottle recycling shed and various food drives.

Congratulations to these young skaters who are living examples that life is what you make of it.
