Youth in Sport

The Skating Club of Boston’s Youth in Sport initiative provides support for city youth and city-based organizations supporting local youth in learning, appreciating and excelling in the sport of figure skating. The Youth in Sport initiative specifically provides:

  • Underwriting for U.S. Figure Skating’s Skating in the Schools program being introduced at Boston-area schools
  • Scholarships and mentors for Boston students interested in pursuing skating classes at The Frog Pond Skating Academy
  • After-school skating and instruction for groups from the Boston Boys and Girls Clubs interested in learning skating
  • Support for skaters and initiatives for skaters from The Skating Club of Boston who train in Boston and who represent the City of Boston at regional, national and international competitions

Skating in the Schools
Skating in the Schools is an after-school program designed by U.S. Figure Skating to provide children with learning opportunities in a safe, structured environment, and to help them to achieve success in school and in life. Positive outcomes directly related to after-school experiences include:

  • Improved grades, work habits, school attendance
  • Improved social skills and interpersonal behavior
  • Reduced misconduct and risky behavior
  • Enhanced self-efficacy and self-care

Skating in the Schools will provide skating instruction, skate rentals, transportation to and from the rink, a healthy snack and a season pass for public skating for up to 30 students (each) from select schools in the Boston Public School system. Students will be nominated to participate by their schoolteachers, and according to established criteria. The Washington-Irving school in Roslindale program is the pilot school for the 2011/2012 school year. The Club’s intent is to establish a citywide program that provides unique experiential learning coupled with support and guidance to City of Boston youth.

Many skaters from The Skating Club of Boston volunteer to participate in school presentations for Skating in the Schools, as mentors for skating school students, in public exhibitions at the Frog Pond, and in other special performances that benefit the Youth in Sport initiative. This is an opportunity for Club skaters to enrich their own experience as young adults and future leaders by learning the value and satisfaction of sharing their experiences and in giving back to the community.
