Act I of Boston
ACT I of Boston, is The Skating Club of Boston’s senior-level Theatre on Ice team, open to skaters 15 years or older, juvenile level and above. Theatre on Ice is a form of competitive figure skating, which incorporates the elements of drama, theater and show skating. Skater’s benefit from teaming up with a broad range of skating talents, including singles, pairs, ice dance, synchro, and even professional show skaters, to create an original and expressive production on ice.
Through Theatre on Ice, skaters gain valuable experience in presentation and performance, increasing confidence and competition skills valuable across all disciplines. Professional training and focus is spent on animation, dance, and show skating, to emphasize visual storytelling on ice. Furthermore, Theatre on Ice provides team members opportunities for travel to competitions and shows both nationally and internationally, and best of all provides skaters the chance to make new friends within the club. Many of The Skating Club of Boston’s National and International Competitors, and Show Skaters, have skated with Act I of Boston, which has served as a fundamental creative outlet for skaters in addition to their competitive skating in other disciplines.
Much like singles, pairs and ice dance, competing in Theatre on Ice consists of two programs; we have a short program called the Choreographic Exercise, and a long program called the Free Skate. The Choreographic Exercise is a routine based on three elements, theme, choreographic process, and type of gesture or movement; it is done with skaters wearing all black with no scenery or props. The Free Skate is the routine where the performance can soar above and beyond. Starting with a theme, emotion, or story, the Free Skate incorporates costumes, props and scenery to tell a story through a show-style production roughly six minutes in length.
ACT I of Boston is directed by Show Director Timothy LeBlanc, a former competitive figure skater in both singles and pairs, and former ACT I of Boston competitor himself, here at The Skating Club of Boston. Timothy is a former Professional Figure Skater with Disney on Ice and Dancer for Walt Disney Entertainment. He Co-Directed The Skating Club of Boston’s annual Ice Chips show in 2010 and 2011, and became the Show Director for 2012’s 100th Anniversary Celebration.
